Stout Intramural Football – A Closer Look

StoutMedia stopped by Don & Nona Williams Stadium this week to take a closer look at intramural football. Intramural sports are provided by the University Recreation office which can be found inside the Johnson Fieldhouse. University Recreation offers: Flag football, basketball, kickball, and ice hockey, racquetball, tennis, bowling, billiards, disc golf, and Xbox tournaments. They also sponsor weekly NCAA college pick’em (football, basketball), swim meets, and sports trivia contests.

It is a great way to stay in shape and make new friends at Stout in the process.

“I love just getting out there and ballin’, it breaks up the long week, and all the homework.” says sophomore David Bauer.

MCVL with MG & and the Pants at the MSC Underground

Blue Devil Productions brings several interesting performers to Stout, primarily to the Underground in the MSC. Make sure to check out the upcoming shows! Stout Media will be capturing snippets of shows and posting them here. Just in case you miss the event, or want to see the highlights of your favorite act, you’ve got the coverage.

Did you get a chance to see MCVL!!?

These guys are like the beastie boys times ten! With loads of energy, MCVL entertains any crowd, whether they can handle it or not!

While these guys rap on their wireless mics, they enjoy tumbling around in the oddest places. You’ll see them crawling under the stage, jumping on speakers, and somersaulting their way through the crowd! They’re hilarious and downright entertaining, not to mention incredible MC’s with sweet tunes.

Mel Gibson and the Pants began the night with some delicious rhymes and beats backed by instruments and abstract manipulations.

As Harold Sanders raps, his vocals are smoothly tweaked and repeated behind him. Sometimes his voice will swing into a high pitch squeal and then drop like a killed turntable.

Student Opportunities at the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts

Do you know what the Mabel Tainter is all about? The 118 year old building is open to the public. Next time you’re walking by, just stop inside and check out the renovated theater. There is also a public room downstairs with couches, wireless internet, and a big screen television.

Events at the theater consist of a variety of performance arts, which include music, plays, films, lectures, and special events. Take a look at the upcoming performances at www.mabeltainter.com . Rush tickets for $6.00 are available for students two hours prior to the event!

The Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts has many opportunities for students. Space may be utilized in the gallery, studio, public room, and gallery store. The gallery store is an opportunity for students interested in selling their artwork, to gain retail exposure through commission sales. There are also volunteer opportunities for students that relate to various majors. A student studying hospitality and tourism can gain valuable front line customer service experience by becoming involved with the Mabel Tainter.

DNC Chairman Howard Dean Coming To UW-Stout

Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee will be making a stop at UW-Stout on Wednesday, October 1st. UW-Stout is one stop on his Wisconsin tour as he campaigns for Barack Obama.

He will be in the Memorial Student Center, Ballroom A. Doors open at 12:45 p.m. For more information call 715-231-2393

The event also has a presence on Facebook. An event has been established titled ‘HOWARD DEAN @ UW-STOUT’

In addition to his distinguished political career, Howard Dean is probably most remembered for his speech at the 2004 Iowa Democratic caucuses seen below:

Auto Club Cruise a Success

The UW-Stout Auto Club started the year off with a bang on September 18th with an all-club cruise. Nearly twenty cars showed up to participate in the event. After meeting in the old grocery parking lot the cars drove through Menomonie and then out to the bottoms to view the scenery. Upon returning to Menonomie, the train of cars cruised through campus before returning to the parking lot and going their separate ways. The Auto Club normally meets on Tuesdays in the White Pine room of the MSC at 7:00 pm.

UW-Stout Considering Smoking Ban On Campus

The University of Wisconsin – Stout is currently in talks about instituting a smoking ban on University grounds. No person, whether student or faculty, could smoke on campus. This poses some major questions.

How will the University enforce it? Smoking is so prevalent on our campuses nationwide, it would lead to many citations being issued. One might argue that an officer could just spend his entire shift handing out smoking citations.

“If people choose to smoke, I think they should be able to do it outside. I don’t feel they should have to walk off campus to carry on their addictions. I also feel that nobody would be able to enforce it.” said Stacey Kanarski, a non-smoking UW-Stout student.

One college has recognized this fact. Fuellerton College does not issue citations, rather they ask the student or faculty members to put it out. Fullerton College reports this has been successful thus far and have not had to issue citations or remove students from campus.

Where will the students go? Our campus is surrounded by businesses and residences leaving minimal places for students and faculty to light up. Some students have proposed that UW-Stout make ‘smoking shelters’, especially in the cold winter months. When it is -35 degrees, are you going to want students to walk across the street to smoke and risk frostbite or car accidents?

Is the ban a violation of your fundamental rights? Smoking is legal, however, it does affect those people who are in the same environment and chose not to smoke. There are two ways to look at the issue. Do citizens have the ‘right’ to breath clean air? Or do citizens have the right to light up anywhere they choose, especially outdoors since it is legal? You be the judge.

“I don’t smoke, but I don’t think it would beneficial if we made the entire campus smoke free. We then would be regulating every little thing the student chooses to do. It may also be a freedom the student never had at home, and college is about finding out who you are. I don’t like smoking, but I don’t believe we can say no to their (smokers) lifestyle choices.” says Clay Lanners, UW-Stout student.

Football Falls To Missouri; Now 2-1

The Blue Devil football team lost by a score of 31-24 last Saturday at Don and Nona Williams Stadium. Missouri S&T is a Div. II squad that was formerly named Missouri-Rolla. Junior QB Kyle Provos couldn’t find a rhythm all evening, ending up 13 of 40, throwing one interception and one touchdown on the night. Trevor Fiege (FR) was Stout’s leading rusher again this week, tallying 127 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.

The renaissance man Antawan Walker (JR) and Patrick Mengelkoch (SO) combined for 9 catches totaling 99 yards.

This week the Blue Devils have a bye-week and will start conference play two Saturday’s from now when they travel to UW-Platteville.

UW-Stout Students Speak Out About Lowering The Drinking Age

Over 100 chancellors and presidents from around the nation have jumped on a new campaign to examine the effectiveness of the current drinking age. Two of those chancellors are from Wisconsin colleges. Ripon College President David Joyce and Jack Keating, former UW-Parkside Chancellor, were the only collegiate leaders to sign the petition at the time of this article.

UW-Madison has not looked at the issue yet. They stated it is not the right time with the transition of University leadership to new Chancellor Biddy Martin from Cornell University. However, Chancellor Martin is reportedly open to the idea of discussing the new initiative.

This campaign was launched in July by John McCardell, president emeritus of Middlebury College. The petition circulating college campuses has signatures from prestigious universities like: Dartmouth College, Tufts University, Duke University, and The Ohio State University.

However not all UW-Stout students agree on the issue. A male student who wished to remain unidentified stated that although bars would see a huge spike in sales, is more young adults packed into a small space filled with cigarette smoke a healthy solution for our student body?

Sarah Fischer, a sophomore with an undeclared major provided her thoughts with StoutMedia at Price Commons over a tray of food.

“It’s the way our country perceives drinking, other countries like Japan or Germany it’s part of their culture, they don’t look down upon it, it’s part of the way they live, they accept it.” said Fischer.

Students provided their feedback via Facebook as well, one of those students was Eric Lamal. Eric is a freshmen majoring in Construction Management.

“I would like to see some sort of an open container policy; such as it is legal to consume alcohol and buy it from a bar or restaurant at eighteen and buy closed containers such as bottles of liquor or cases of beer at twenty-one. This would allow eighteen to twenty-one year olds to socialize with alcohol in a controlled environment.” says Lamal.

Overall, most students at UW-Stout feel the issue should be examined. They feel their peers would cut down on binge drinking and be more responsible.

At the time of this article, UW-Stout Chancellor Charles Sorensen has chosen to not sign the Amethyst Initiave.

Blue Devil’s Cant Quite Hold On Against Saints

Tuesday night at the Johnson Fieldhouse, the UW-Stout women’s volleyball team was defeated by St. Scholastica 3-1. Steph Nichols dominated the net with 19 kills and no errors!

Sara Kjos and Maggie Meixel also contributed both getting 9 kills on the evening.

Volleyball schedule for September:

September 19th @ UW-Oshkosh – 7 p.m.

September 20th @ UW-Whitewater – Noon

September 26 & 27 @ Viterbo Touranment – TBA

September 30th @ Northwestern College – 7 p.m.

Football Team Rolls To 2-0

The Blue Devil Football team rolled past Jamestown College (ND) by a score of 37-13 on Saturday, moving the team to 2-0 overall on the season. It was a cool, dreary and soggy day at Don and Nona Williams Stadium with a game time temperature of 65 degrees. Still 1020 members of the Blue Devil Nation filed in to see the 2008 home opener.

Stout quarterback Kyle Provos (Jr) threw for three touchdowns and scored one on the ground tip toeing across the goal-line. Provos was 12 for 19 with 1 INT racking up 101 yards and three touchdowns on the day.

Hometown hero Trevor Fiege (Fr) from Menomonie rushed for 104 yards, including one 41 yard attempt busting through the Jamestown defense. Fiege averaged 10.4 yards per carry on the day.

The real story of the day is the UW-Stout defense, which bottled up the Jamestown offense all day. The Jamestown College offense put up almost 600 yards the previous week. Jake Pomputis (Sr) led the Blue Devils ‘D’ with 6 solo tackles, 1 assist and 1 interception that he brought back for 52 yards to setup a Blue Devil field goal.

Next Saturday the team hopes to extend their record to 3-0 when Missouri S&T comes to town for the annual Hall of Fame game. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. next Saturday at Don & Nona Williams Stadium in Menomonie. Admission for UW-Stout students is FREE.
